Corolla timing cover leak7/28/2023 Some swear by Permantex Right Stuff multipurpose sealant, though I've not used that particular sealant on anything thus far. As for sealant, Toyota recommends FIPG material made by Three Bond - there is a Permantex equivalent FIPG sealant. As for the specific size of the stud, I don't remember off the top of my head - it size generally not indicated in those service manuals, might be due to regional variances. On the timing cover and replacement gaskets - let me see if I can find some PDFs to point you in the right direction. Most won't last much past 200K miles, even under the best conditions - at your mileage, couldn't hurt to check. They may visually look OK, until the are removed - then you'll see if they are damaged or not. But with this mileage, might be a good idea to check the engine mounts. The belt tensioner - should be able to get to it without remove the engine mount, if I remember correctly. Myself personally, over 7 Toyota vehicles with three pushing past 200K miles, one over 300K miles, never had to replace the OEM water pump. Otherwise, probably couldn't hurt to replace it - flush the system with distilled water and refill with the appropriate mix of distilled water and coolant. I know Karate, Kung Fu, and 47 other dangerous words (9,744 posts)Īs for the water pump - as long as you stayed pretty conservative on the coolant change schedule and stuck with distilled water and Toyota Red coolant - I wouldn't worry about a water pump failure at this point. It did mention some thing about torx bit stud that need to be removed to get the timing cover off. Should I replace the pump and gasket for preventive maintenance since I have to take the timing cover off to repair the leak?Ģ) The serpentine belt tensioner, when I take it off, do I need to remove the engine mount?ģ) What do I need to remove before I could remove the timing cover to replace the leaking gasket? The Hayne's manual is not very useful and neither do they have a big view of all the parts. I need some pointers and advice on what to do over all.ġ) Now the water pump isn't leaking and no sign of bad bearing or weird noise yet. When we got the car, it was in great condition with only 89K miles with zero leak. The first one was a rental and another person then us. The car now has 165K miles and the water pump is still original I think. The belt does not have any metal or shredded strands. The serpentine belt has tiny little cracks which prompt for replacement soon. The power steering pump is also leaking at the shaft seal. The car currently has an oil leak with the timing cover, chain tensioner leak just replaced less than 20K miles ago.
